So there’s pretty much lots of noise about the DS’s successor, going under the alias of 3DS. Although the DS by the calendar is due a refresh I can’t help but feel there’s life in the old bean yet. I can imagine some personification of the DS/Lite/i standing flooded in regeneration energy shedding a tear and uttering “I don’t want to go” before becoming the 3DS in a flash of Type-40-damaging light. Geronimo!
As ever when standing at the cusp of a new console thoughts tend to turn to all the neglected games and those yet-to-be-played from the exiting character. Not that the DS will simply vanish any time soon – look how long the GBA was kicking around for while the DS was learning to walk and talk – but since the 3DS was announced and dev kits appeared in the mitts of eager developers it felt a little like interest in dusting off the N64 style polygons for one last push for something amazing on the DS would wane.
Which, to use poor grammar after an inexplicable paragraph break, seems a particular shame as DSiWare seems to only just be picking up pace and becoming interesting. With luck the DSiWare store will make it’s way over to the 3DS but, of course, no word on such things yet. Worst case the 3DS will have a dedicated download store but, for me, it would make sense to lump in the current catalogue of DSi goodies.
The path life takes us can lead us into avenues in which we play less games than we’d like and never is this focussed more than with chatter of a new console being out, in Japan at least, potentially by the end of the year. A sense of urgency creeps in and a terrible feeling that an old friend has been neglected for too long.
Think I’ll be getting some DSi play time in today.
